Neslon Mandela, the charismatic South African leader was born in the city of UMTATA, the Province of Transkey on the South Western part of South Africa. Nelson Mandela is a member of the TEMBU tribe.

We present herewith a short series of carvings produced by Tembu artists and depicting faces, the physiognomy of the Tembu tribesmen, as well as their classic clothing and hats.

The main stone occurring in the Transkey is Green Quartz, used here for most of each carving. Then, the artists used many other local stones, trying to preserve as much as possible of real coloring as it can be seen on the average clothing and headgear.

Of course, like in so many other parts of Africa, lions are supposed to roam the Transkey and here we have added a magnificent rendition of the King Lion.
